Figure of a water moon Guanyin. China, late Qing dynasty. Light pottery, glazed in white. Deity sitting in loose lalitasana, with rich chain ornaments on the chest and Buddha Amitabha figurine in the splendid crown. Unmarked. Signs of age.

The manifestation of compassion, alternately depicted as feminine and masculine, sits in the posture of royal serenity. This type is also called water moon Guanyin, as according to legends, the androgynous god was sitting in that posture at the water and absently observed the moon reflection.

China, späte Qing-Dynastie. Heller Scherben, weiß glasiert. Gottheit in lockerer lalitasana sitzend, mit reichem Kettenschmuck auf der Brust und Buddha Amitabha in der prächtigen Krone. Ungemarkt. Altersspuren.
H. 78, B. 40,5 cm.
Die Manifestation des Mitgefühls, wechselnd weiblich und auch männlich dargestellt, sitzt hier in der Haltung königlicher Gelassenheit. Dieser Typus wird auch Wasser-Mond-Guanyin genannt, da der androgyne Gott laut Legende in jener Haltung am Wasser saß und dort gedankenverloren die Mondspiegelung betrachtete.
